Copper theft has become one of the fastest growing forms of crime in the Province of Ontario.

The Greater Sudbury area has experienced numerous copper theft complaints from Hydro One, as well as from other businesses.

In power lines, copper wire is used as a conductor for electricity.  Contact with an energized power line can result in serious injury or death from electrocution.

We are requesting the public's assistance to identify these thieves, and those paying for the stolen metals.

In some cases suspects are entering secured areas and cutting live wires in an attempt to retreive the copper for cash.  This is an extremely dangerous practice and can put the lives of suspects, the general public and employees at risk.  It could also negatively impact the reliability of our services that utilize copper wire and could result in system failures leading to blackouts or in power surges that could cause house fires.
