On 30 June 2009, 35 youth from Greater Sudbury will be awarded their very own, brand new mountain bicycle and bicycle helmet for their participation in the Tim Horton’s Earn-A-Bike program during the month of May and June. The bicycle and helmet presentations will take place in the Main Foyer of Tom Davies Square at 1:30pm.
These children, between the ages of 9 and 14 years, were selected by the Greater Sudbury Police Service and various organizations throughout the City as children whose families are not able to afford a new bicycle. The organizations participating in this event are Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Child and Family Services, N’Swakamok Friendship Center, Aboriginal Women’s Ad Hoc Committee, COPS for Kids, Valley View Public School. Cst. Midena coordinated the program and supervision with Cst. Duffy and these organizations while the children were out completing 30 hours of community service by cleaning up Junction Creek, local parks, local neighbourhoods, at festivals, schools and assisting a local community group.
The “Earn-A-Bike” program was initiated by the Hamilton-Wentworth Police Service in 1996, and in 1998 Tim Hortons became the title sponsor.
